Glossary

A

  • Argonaught - A race of marine, fish-like people who emerge from the sea and attempt to blend in with land-dwelling societies.
  • Argonautica - An oceanic planet full of life, with extremely large and deep oceans. Inhabited by people such as Argonaughts, Northerlies, and Terrestidae.
  • Anomaly/Aberration - Term often used to describe the interior, true body of an Argonaught. Can also be used to describe any creature mutated unnaturally by lucid forces.
  • B

  • Bacteriophage - The end result of a Remnant driven to maddness by the solitude of the In-Between and inability to sleep. After prolonged isolation and aggrivation, a Remnant can scorch into a monster that is almost always uncanny and very aggressive, and will remain a mindless beast until they eventually melt away and become one with the landscape of the layer they are trapped in.
  • Bacterium - The smaller, more squidgy form a Remnant is able to take at will. Often used for better maneuverability, escape from bacteriophages, or simply out of preference.
  • D

  • Dreamscape - The in-universe name for the galaxy greated by the Great Beasts. Also used as the meta setting name.
  • G

  • Great Beasts - God-like beings said to have been born between the stars with the ability to mold and warp reality with their dreams and desires. There are three Great Beasts that are actively known and worshipped within the Dreamscape: The Fathomless, The Boundless, and The Limitless. Additionally, there are two Great Beasts who are considered either obscure or dead: The Endless and The Thoughtless.
  • I

  • In-Between - A liminal, limbo-like plane of existance said to be a purgatory of some kind where the forgotten end up.
  • L

  • Lucidity/Lucid ability - Measure of magical ability. Individuals with higher lucidity could be considered more "powerful" or capable of bending the Dreamscape a bit more than the average person. All people, animals, and even certain plants and objects have a certain standard level of lucidity.
  • Lucent - Term for unique individuals of exceptional lucidity, said to have a power second only to the Great Beasts. Individuals may become a Lucent after intervention or a blessing of some sort from one of the Great Beasts, where they experience a transformation of some sort and gain their power. Very few exist, and it is unknown why exactly the Great Beasts may create them. All Lucents exhibit unique, one-of-a-kind traits and abilities not seen in their species and become functionally immortal.
  • Lunaridae - A race of spacefaring, rabbit-like people with naturally high lucidity.
  • Lunar Commission - A faction of the Lunaridae Empire who dedicate themselves to discovery and technological advancement. Out of universe, it is also used as the general category for most Lunaridae characters.
  • M

  • Mortalkind - Collective catch-all term for sapient species, usually used when referring to two or more populations. Essentially the replacement for the terms mankind, humankind, and humanity as humans don't exist within the Dreamscape.
  • N

  • Northerlie - A race of resilient, seal-like people native to Argonautica.
  • R

  • Remnant - The only race of people that inhabit the In-Between, made up of what is essentially the amnesic leftovers of who someone once was in life and influenced by the layer of the In-Between they either manifested on or originate from. Everyone who enters the In-Between, regardless of what they were born as, will eventually become a Remnant.
  • S

  • Scorching - Term used to describe a sudden change in an individual's lucidity via outside sources. Scorching is rare and generally considered something one would want to avoid, as it is very painful and leaves the victim with lasting physical and mental damage. Lucent individuals may also be considered scorched to an extreme degree.
  • Seascorching - A phenomenon that appears to be exclusive to Argonautica, where extreme long-term exposure to the ocean without necessary precautions can result in unique forms of scorching. It is also the precursor to the birth of an Argonaught in the case of marine life inexplicably scorching.
  • T

  • Terrestidae - A race of industrious people who seem to always have a sizable population on any planet that hosts its own sapient life. They have a uniquely low lucid baseline and are theorized to be the descendents of the expansionist era of the Lunaridae Empire.
